# How Kompass fits together

> What to have ready, how the app is laid out, and the order to do things in the first time.

Kompass connects to your accounting system, reads the budget you already have, and compares the two every day. The first time through, work in this order: connect your ledger, upload your budget, map it, then run budget vs actuals. After that, each guide stands alone.

## Before you start

* **Access to your accounting system.** Credentials for whichever provider you use. If you cannot get API access, you can upload a CSV instead.
* **Your approved budget workbook.** The spreadsheet as it was signed off. You do not need to reformat it or move it into a template.
* **Your chart of accounts.** Kompass reads it from your accounting system once connected, so there is nothing to prepare. It helps to know who in your team can answer questions about account codes.

## How the app is laid out

| Section | Pages |
| - | - |
| Top | Get started, Dashboards |
| Plan | Budgets, Budget vs Actuals, Projections |
| Build | Models, Metrics, Dimensions, Datasets |
| Foot of the menu | Integrations, Settings |

Getting to your first variance report happens in **Integrations**, **Budgets** and **Budget vs Actuals**. **Co-Pilot** sits in the top right of every screen.
