# Map your budget

> Point every budget line at an account in your chart of accounts, starting with Auto-map and finishing by hand.

Mapping tells Kompass which ledger account each budget line belongs to. Variance analysis, reports and dashboards all read from it, so this is the step to slow down on. A line mapped to the wrong account still looks plausible; it is just wrong.

This is not *Map your chart of accounts*, which matches each ledger account to a budget line in Settings. Here you work from the budget side.

## Where you are

A new budget opens in **Review budget**, one tab per uploaded sheet.

| What you see | What it means |
| - | - |
| *n* of *n* items mapped | Progress on the tab you are viewing. |
| Auto-map *n* | Items Kompass can map across every sheet in one pass. |
| *n* unmapped items | What is left on this tab. |
| Confirm & save | Saves your mapping without making the budget live. |

## Steps

1. Click **Auto-map**. Kompass matches what it is confident about and leaves the rest. Every match is visible and reversible.
2. Accept the high-confidence suggestions. At 95% and above they are almost always direct name matches, such as *Mombasa → 6702 Mombasa Branch*.
3. Read the lower ones. A score below that means Kompass made a judgement, and the reasoning says which. A CAPEX line mapped to gross PPE at 72% might belong to intangibles instead; only you know.
4. For lines flagged **Kompass could not auto-map this item**, click **Assign GL**, search by code or name, check the account type, and click **Assign**.

> **Treat the score as a reading order, not a verdict.** Start with the lowest. A 72% match accepted without reading is a decision made by default.

> **Asset and liability accounts sit side by side** in the search results. Read the type before you assign.
