# Upload an existing Excel budget

> Kompass reads the workbook you already have. There is no template to conform to.

Kompass reads the workbook you already have. There is no template to conform to. Connect your accounting system first: **Upload new budget** stays disabled until your chart of accounts has been imported.

## Steps

1. Open **Budgets** and click **Upload new budget**.
2. Complete **Create a new budget** and click **Continue**.
3. Drag your workbook into the upload area, or browse for it. Excel and CSV are both accepted.
4. Tick the sheets you want Kompass to extract, then continue.
5. Wait for processing to finish. A large multi-year workbook takes a few minutes. You can close the dialog and come back; it continues in the background.

## Create a new budget

| Field | What to enter |
| - | - |
| Creation mode | **Upload a completed budget** if the workbook already holds your figures. Choose **Start from a template** if departments will fill in the figures; see *Assign sheets and approve budgets*. |
| Budget name | What your team calls it, for example `FY2026 Operating Budget`. |
| Type of budget | Pick from the list: annual, operating, capital and so on. |
| Fiscal year | The year this budget covers. |
| Fiscal year start / end | The months your financial year runs between. For a January-to-December year, January and December. |
| Currency | The currency the workbook is written in. |
| Figures are in | The denomination: actual amounts, thousands, millions or billions. It **cannot be changed later**. |

> **Check the denomination before you continue.** If your workbook is in thousands and you leave this as actual amounts, every figure will be a thousand times too small. It cannot be corrected afterwards; the budget has to be uploaded again.

## Choosing sheets

Kompass tags each sheet with what it believes it contains (**Income Statement**, **Balance Sheet**, **Cash Flow**, assumptions, drivers or schedules) and shows its size. Use **Select all** if you want everything, but leaving out working sheets and notes keeps the mapping step shorter.

## Next

When processing finishes, the budget opens in **Review budget** for mapping. See *Map your budget*.
