Department heads know their numbers best. Assigning sheets lets each department fill in its own part of the budget while finance keeps the master sheets.

Before you start

  • Create the budget with Start from a template in Create a new budget: you upload the workbook’s structure and departments supply the figures. A budget made with Upload a completed budget already has its figures and has no department sheets.
  • Add departments and people. In Settings › Team & permissions, add departments on the Departments tab, invite people from the Invitations tab, then set each person’s Department on the Members tab.

Assign sheets

  1. Open the budget, click the ⋯ menu and choose Map sheets.
  2. For each sheet pick an Owner: a department, or Master (finance) to keep it with finance.
  3. Set a Due date for each department sheet, then click Save assignments.
The department is notified and can open its sheet straight away. Its lines are tagged with the department, so variance by department works without extra setup. From three days before the due date, Kompass sends reminders until the sheet is submitted.

Review what comes back

Submitted sheets appear under Department sheets on the budget page, and the budget owner is notified. Anyone with budget approval rights, such as an Analyst or Admin, can review them.
  1. Click Open to read the sheet.
  2. Click Approve to accept it. Editing is locked.
  3. Or click Request changes, say what needs to change and click Send request. The sheet reopens with your note at the top.

Bring it together

From the ⋯ menu choose Consolidated view, then Run consolidation. Kompass rolls department lines up onto the matching master lines and recomputes subtotals. Lines with no match are listed for review, never created. When every sheet is in, approve the budget itself: see Finish and approve your budget.
